Vehicle Inspections

A vehicle inspection for the State of Nebraska may be conducted by any County Sheriff, or holder of a current certificate of training, on all vehicles and trailers that have been titled in another state. The inspection includes an examination and notation of the current odometer reading and a comparison of VINs. The fee is $10.00, and is credited to the County Sheriff’s Inspection account with the county general fund.

Vehicles that must be inspected:  Any vehicle or motorcycle with an out-of-state title, any vehicle with a Salvage Certificate of Title, dump trucks, grain trailers, assembled trailers, livestock trailers & tractors that are not pro-rated, semi-trailers, boat trailers if pulled by a truck or a non-pro-rated tractor.

Vehicles that are exempt from this inspection:  When application is being made for a Salvage title or a Non-Transferable title; vehicles with a Nebraska Certificate of Title, a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, a US Government Certificate Title, or a (duly licensed) Dealer’s Inspection Exemption Certificate; vehicles registered through the Nebraska DMV Motor Carriers Division; cabin trailers, pop-up trailers, mobile homes, travel trailers, camping trailers, pro-rated tractors (non-motorized.)

While this inspection may be performed by any authorized Sheriff’s Office employee in the State of Nebraska, you must present your vehicle’s documentation to the County Clerk in your county of residence to obtain your vehicle title and registration.
